River North

Bound by Michigan Avenue to the east, Chicago Avenue to the north, and the Chicago River to the south and west, River North, first an industrial area and later a warehouse district, now features hip restaurants and respected galleries, both of which have attracted in-the-know homebuyers. The result?  A variety of chic new houses and luxury hi-rises as well as an unlimited assortment of close-to-home activities. Entrepreneurs may enjoy the view of the towering Trump International Hotel, while Fashionistas will take pleasure in The Merchandise Mart, situated on the area's Southern rim.  Those who favor collecting over fashion will benefit from the host of antique stores flooding the neighborhood, while foodies will delight in choosing from the hundreds of restaurants River North has to offer. Rick Bayless' Frontera Grill and Rock Bottom Brewery are local favorites, but whether one craves Japanese or German, options abound.

Just west of The Magnificent Mile, River North is not only a tourist destination, but also home to a host of young professionals. In the last ten years, more than 25,000 new residents, many thrilled by their proximity to the Loop, have flooded the area. Inhabitants live in an assortment of mid-rise condominiums, converted warehouses, town homes and breezy timber lofts.  Posh row homes and modern high-rises are also available, and overall prices range from three hundred thousand to several million dollars. Due to the neighborhood's popularity, growth has also crept west of the Chicago River, producing River West, an area mainly populated by condominiums.
